The nation’s finest young sailors have been greeting the shores of Hayling Bay over the weekend in preparation for the prestigious 2011 RYA Volvo Youth National Championships (11-15 April).

Over 335 of the country’s finest Youth dinghy, catamaran and windsurf racers in 247 boats/windsurfers are now ready to set sail set for the opportunity to be crowned 2011 RYA Volvo Youth National Champion and also for the chance to be selected for RYA Volvo Team GBR the British Sailing team for the ISAF Youth Sailing World Championship 2011.

The championships are welcoming some of last year’s winners as well as a host of younger sailors, who for some will be their first regatta in the Youth racing programme.

Annabel Vose and Megan Brickwood, current 420 Ladies World champions, are among the young competitors vying for championship glory over the next week of racing at Hayling Island Sailing Club.

Vose, whilst in the boat park prepping her 420 double-handed dinghy, commented: “We are really looking forward to the Championships this year and are hoping for some positive results as well as the chance to develop our skills. Weather permitting, we want to sail as well as we can and are are hoping not to make too many mistakes which in turn will hopefully improve our final race results”.

Brickwood, added: “Todays conditions have been great and we are hoping that the Championships are greeted with a range of winds making for a fair and competitive series. A variety of winds will make the racing a lot more enjoyable and will provide all the competitors with the chance to sail well.”

Vose concluded: “The Championships always have good, strong sailors but this year the 420 fleet looks like it could be very tough. The RYA National Youth squad sailors always provide strong competition but we believe everyone in the 420 fleet has the potential to do well. Towards the end of the week is when things will become challenging but hopefully we have put in enough training and preparation over the winter period to do well.”

As part of the sailors’ whole sailing education programme, a number of guest speakers and experts will be hosting special lecture sessions over the course of the week. Today, RYA Volvo Youth Programme sports psychologist Gemma Douglas presented a session on ‘Delivering Your Potential’.

She said: “Everyone has arrived with a potential this week, the key is that we help them to manage the distractions and focus on the things that will help them to deliver this potential. In competition the goalposts are always moving, the main thing is that they expect the unexpected, respond logically and take every bit of learning from one day to the next.”

As always the event also doubles up as a selection event for the ISAF Youth Sailing World Championships 2011, which this year take place in Zadar, Croatia in July.

Duncan Truswell, RYA Youth Racing Manager, commented: “This year’s Championships are shaping up to be a very competitive, as well enjoyable, week of sail racing. With over 247 entries we are hoping to provide competitors with a regatta which will prepare them for international sail racing, the forthcoming ISAF Youth World Championships as well as offer a good insight for the younger sailors who have only recently moved up from the RYA Junior programme.

“The weather forecast for forthcoming week of racing is varied and will provide the sailors with a mixture of conditions, which will only aid their development and offer the opportunity for the young sailors to really impress.”

In addition, Skandia Team GBR and Team Volvo for Life Laser star Paul Goodison, the 2008 Olympic gold medallist, and Annie Lush, part of Lucy Macgregor’s current Women’s Match Racing World champion team, will be making special appearances to support the young sailors towards the end of the week.

Day one of racing is set to commence at 11.25am tomorrow (Monday) with three races scheduled for all classes, except the Laser Standards who commence their racing programme on Tuesday.

Final day golds for Ainslie and Goodison cap off GBR’s eight medal haul in Palma

Ben Ainslie and Paul Goodison claimed gold in the Finn and Laser classes on the final day of racing in Palma (Saturday 9 April) to bring the British medal tally to eight at this third leg of the ISAF Sailing World Cup series.

Ainslie and Goodison’s victories ensured a hat-trick of golds for Skandia Team GBR at this Princess Sofia Trophy, with Olympic and World Champions Iain Percy and Andrew Simpson having already sealed the regatta title on Friday in the Star class with a day to spare.

Giles Scott captured silver behind Ainslie in the Finn class, with bronze medals going to Nick Thompson in the Laser event, Nick Dempsey in the RS:X windsurfing event and Luke Patience-Stuart Bithell in the 470 men’s fleet to add to Megan Pascoe’s bronze from the 2,4mR Paralympic event on Friday.

After a short delay while the wind conditions built across Palma Bay on Saturday morning, the final ten-boat medal races got underway. The Finn class was the first to start, with the triple Olympic medallist Ben Ainslie enjoying a fourteen point cushion over compatriot Giles Scott heading into the final race.

Ainslie sailed a flawless final to lead the rest of the fleet over the finish line and secure regatta victory by twenty points, with a fourth place in the medal race more than enough to ensure a silver for Scott and book a second British step on the Finn podium.

“It’s been a good week, it was a nice way to end off,” said Ainslie after the medal race. “It was one of those races where everything went right and that doesn’t happen too often!

“It was a good race today so I’m happy with that, and I’m happy with the week but there’s a long way to go this season and I’m looking forward to the next event.”

Olympic Champion Paul Goodison emerged on top from the fascinating Laser class showdown which saw him, World Champion Tom Slingsby (AUS) and fellow Brit Nick Thompson all effectively level on points heading into the final day. The finishing order between the three on the water today would determine the order of the podium spots and Goodison took the initiative early on, rounding the first windward mark in first place.

He kept his medal rivals firmly behind him for the entire race, finishing third with Slingsby and Thompson in fifth and seventh in the ten-boat race.

“It was going to be whoever was going to cross the line first, so the only real option was to go and win the race,” said Goodison of his approach to the race.
“After getting round the top mark leading it was all a bit easier seeing the guys behind me and from then it was just about making sure I didn’t do anything silly and finishing it off.

“It was a little bit frustrating to get an over the line a little bit earlier in the week, which made it a lot harder going into yesterday but I’m pretty happy with how I’m sailing and to see me delivering under pressure. Fingers crossed for the rest of the season!”

Iain Percy and Andrew Simpson, already guaranteed gold in the Star keelboat event, finished their regatta with a 37 point margin over the second placed German boat of Robert Stanjek-Frithjof Kleen who won silver on countback over Brazil’s Torben Grael-Marcelo Ferreira.
Luke Patience and Stuart Bithell improved their overnight position from fourth to claim bronze, and so nearly a silver, in the 470 men’s event. The incredibly tight medal race saw the British pair cross the finish line in third, almost level with the French pair Nicolas Charbonnier and Jeremie Mion with the result going in the French pair’s favour, meaning the Skandia Team GBR pair miss out on the silver medal spot by just one point.

Bithell explained: “The medal race today was very close – they always are – and it was a particular condition that made it even closer. It came down to a very, very close finish to the extent where we put a quick protest in at the end. We thought we might have had the silver medal opportunity but that wasn’t to be.”
Helmsman Patience was over the moon with another podium finish for the pairing after a testing week.

“We’re very pleased to have come away with another medal,” he said. “That’s our fifth regatta in a row that we’ve come away with a medal so we’re so happy with that, it’s a different place to where we were a year ago.

“It was a difficult regatta,” he continued. “It was high scoring as Princess Sofia often is and at the end of the day what matters is the finishing place when you cross the finish line at the end of the last race – we’re happy to say that was in a medal position for us.”

Nick Dempsey secured a fourth bronze for Skandia Team GBR in the RS:X men’s windsurfing event, but was disappointed with his medal race performance. He finished tenth in the race to slip from his silver medal position overnight, while Penny Clark and Katrina Hughes were unable to improve on their fourth place heading into the 470 women’s final, having to re-cross the startline after a premature start.

Dylan Fletcher-Alain Sign finished as the best British boat in the 49er event, in sixth place overall thanks to their fifth from the medal race, with Paul Brotherton-Mark Asquith ending their regatta in eighth, Stevie Morrison-Ben Rhodes ninth and John Pink-Rick Peacock tenth.

“It’s certainly been a testing regatta but there have been some good performances this week, and some close battles especially in the Finn, 470 and Laser classes,” said RYA Olympic Manager Stephen Park.

“It’s disappointing that some of our sailors haven’t reached their potential this week, having achieved less than they were hoping for here, but overall it’s been a good regatta for Skandia Team GBR with eight medals won including three golds, and shows that we’re still on track and where we want to be.”

RYA Yorkshire and Humberside OnBoard
The OnBoard scheme, one of the flagship programmes run by the RYA, is a grass roots programme which introduces sailing and windsurfing to young people aged 8 to 18, through schools, youth groups and RYA training centres. “We are delighted to be expanding the RYA OnBoard programme,” said Liz Wrigglesworth, RYA Yorkshire and Humberside OnBoard Development Officer. “The scheme has been running throughout Yorkshire for a couple of years now and more sailing centres are joining as OnBoard partners every month. Expanding into Humberside will mean we can offer sailing opportunities to even more local children.” “Some of the most talented and successful sailors in the UK began their sailing careers in Yorkshire and Humberside,” explained Liz. “The OnBoard scheme is gathering pace across the country. This is great news for youngsters as sailing combines health, exercise and skills development.” Over a ten year period OnBoard aims to introduce a minimum of 500,000 children to sailing and windsurfing in the UK, converting over 10% of them into regular participants. Yorkshire’s young sailors get OnBoard

Supervised by John Goodyear and Felicity Patterson from the Centre and School, the teenagers had a lot of fun learning to sail on the lake, despite the weather… “Imagine how good sailing will be when the sun comes out!” said Sara Khan. “It was brilliant, I loved it. I hope we go out in Toppers again,” said Sarah Emmett. And, despite being the only member of the team to capsize, Midha Singh was equally enthusiastic, “I really want to do it again even though I was scared at the beginning.” The RYA OnBoard plaque was presented to the Leeds Sailing and Activity Centre after the Grammar School sailing session. Rotherham Sailing Club: Sailing for Gold
Rotherham Sailing Club, Wath Cricket Club and the City of Sheffield Diving Club fought it out for Club of the Year at the South Yorkshire Sports awards held at the English Institute last week.
Whilst Sheffield Diving Club won the prestigious award, Rotherham Sailing Club, based in Harthill, were proud to be recognised as one of the top three sports clubs in South Yorkshire. Making it against a wide range of stiff competition, was icing on the cake. One member, Keith Bailey said “whilst we did not win the award getting into the last three is tremendous recognition of the progress we have made in the last 12 months and recognises the hard work of all of our volunteers”. Another, Chris Cooper said “whilst we may have missed out on this award we are looking forward to March when the Royal Yachting Association announce their Club of the Year for which we are nominated and we have been asked to speak at the National Dinghy Show, in London, on our development journey”.
South Yorkshire Sport Director, Bruce Kelsey, said: “The quality of the nominees for our Club of the Year Award proves that there is a huge and lasting commitment to sport across South Yorkshire. These clubs are truly an inspiration to us all. They, and the many others that operate across South Yorkshire, are managed by an army of dedicated volunteers, deliver high quality community based sports programmes and are a fantastic example of what can be achieved by determination and team work.
“Reading about their achievements shows the wealth and depth of sporting opportunity we have in South Yorkshire. It’s fantastic to see such a wide variety of sports represented in this category. Hopefully these clubs can use their nominations for this year’s awards to increase interest in their sports in 2011.”
The nomination for Club of the Year recognises how the club’s instructors have developed a comprehensive training, coaching and sailing programme and boasts 120 members. The active youth section won the Yorkshire and Humberside Youth Sailing Association team trophy – a tremendous achievement for the team with an average age of 13.
In 2010 the club also developed into a more socially conscious organisation with links created to include local schools, Scout groups and clubs, plus national mentoring charity SOVA (Supporting Others through Voluntary Action).
2010 was a great year – 2011 looks to be even more impressive and the Club look forwards to winning South Yorkshire Sports Club of the Year next year.

Lifetime Achievement: David White of Ulley Sailing Club

David, a former fireman and BT engineer, has been a member of the Ulley Sailing Club for 20 years and loves sailing whatever the weather. Now in his 70th year, he competes every weekend, helps maintain the club’s sailing equipment and also loves to mentor new members. He always looks forward to organising the club's annual expedition to Southport to take part in the 24-hour race.

During the last three years, since the floods of June 2007 disrupted the clubs operation, David has been a major force in keeping the club together. He has been instrumental in helping redecorate the club gallery, kitchen and clubhouse in the past year.

Fantastic sailing at RYA Volvo North Zone Championships


750 of the nation’s Olympic sailing hopefuls took to the water over the weekend of 25th/26th Sept, as the 2010 Volvo RYA Zone and Home Country Championships took place across Scotland, England and Wales. Brisk and breezy conditions greeted the North Zone fleet at Yorkshire Dales Sailing Club and Head RYA High Performance Manager Chris Atherton was pleased to see such great conditions and was impressed with how the sailors dealt with the strong winds. “We’ve had really good testing conditions for most of the events across the country which have meant great racing really helping the selectors in making their final decisions for the zone squads invitations. It’s great that the sailors have had the opportunity to show us what they can do in more windy conditions akin to what they can expect through winter zone squad training.” As an extra bonus, Volvo For Life sailor and Skandia Team GBR’s World Champion RS:X windsurfer Nick Dempsey was at the North Zone Championship for the day, and spent Saturday on the water watching the young windsurfers and sailors. He was very impressed with the level of ability and standard of racing in what were challenging conditions. After racing Nick entertained sailors and parents with a presentation about his windsurfing career, his highlights, and low points, and gave us all a very interesting insight into Olympic windsurfing. “I was pleased to be invited to the RYA Volvo North Zone Championships at Yorkshire Dales Sailing Club,” said Nick. "It was fantastic to watch up to 40 windsurfers, and 50 sailors having a great time on the water. During the day I had a chance to speak to some of the young competitors, hopefully some of my advice will help them in the future, in particular the level of skill and ability is very high, and I’m sure some of the windsurfers will be challenging me in the coming years.“ The Championships traditionally mark the end of the Junior racing season and are a key event for any young sailor wishing to be selected for the RYA Volvo Zone and Home Country squads, which are the first step on the pathway to Olympic Classes sailing. Racing was close and the young windsurfers from the North Lincs and Humberside Sailing Club put up a terrific show, nailing first place in each of the windsurfing classes. RYA junior windsurfing tournament sails into Wakefield

For the final time this summer the RYA (Royal Yachting Association) North Zone junior windsurfing fleet is on the move. This time the young windsurfers, all of whom are 15 years of age or under, will do battle on the home waters of the “Pugneys Pirates” at Pugneys Country Park, Wakefield on Sunday 19th Sept.

The youngsters are taking part in the RYA Team15 Championship and the North Zone team with the best score at the end of the summer will compete against all the other RYA Zone winners for the UK Team15 Champions Cup. The team to beat at the moment are the North Lincs Invaders from Barton upon Humber, 2009 UK Team15 Champions, and current leaders of this year’s North Zone competition.

The RYA Team15 competition is an ideal training ground for our young windsurfers, many of whom have gone on to represent the UK in international competitions. The young windsurfers from the Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire Region including Connor Bainbridge from Halifax and George Bowles and Emma Labourne from North Lincs have been particularly successful in recent competitions. 13 year old Emma Labourne, 2009 RYA Yorkshire Young Sailor of the Year and a RYA Team15 Ambassador, recently won silver at the Techno Windsurfing World Championships – a fantastic achievement.

Supported by industry leaders Tushingham/Starboard, Windsurf magazine, Boards magazine, Neil Pryde and Boardwise, T15 was set up by the RYA to help make windsurfing more accessible and appealing to youngsters at a grass roots level.

Fun and informal training sessions take place at T15 clubs all over the country for kids up to the age of 15, which are run weekly by specialist RYA coaches. The T15 inter-club championship takes place regionally over the summer adding a competitive edge and race training for those keen to hone their skills. Kit can be borrowed from the clubs and the cost of sessions is kept low.

The first talk this Autumn is "Chasing Tornadoes with VORTEX2" at 7pm on the 10th November 2010 with Dr Lindsay Bennett (Institute for Climate and Atmospheric Science, University of Leeds).

"The Verification Of Rotation in Tornadoes Experiment took place in the USA during May and June 2009 and 2010. It was the largest and most ambitious study ever undertaken to study tornadoes, with a mobile armada of over 100 scientists and 40 research vehicles. I participated in the field project with a team from the Center for Severe Weather Research who operated 3 mobile radars and six instrumented vehicles. During this talk I will present some of the basic science behind tornadoes and the storms that produce them. I'll describe the instruments that were used to collect the data and the logistics of coordinating such a large fleet of vehicles. In particular I'll talk about my role in the team and some of my experiences of getting up close and personal with severe weather."

Honda RYA Youth RIB Championship

Two young powerboating aces from the RYA (Royal Yachting Association) Yorkshire and Humberside Region will take on the UK’s best young powerboating talent on Sunday 12th Sept, when they compete in the National Final of the Honda RYA Youth RIB Championship at the PSP Southampton Boat Show.

13 year old Katherine Rhodes from Market Weighton, East Yorkshire and 9 year old Ethan Peck from Grimsby, will compete in the Youth and Junior UK finals having recently won the Yorkshire and Humberside Regional Championships at Welton Sailing Club on Saturday 4th September. After a summer of regional finals across the UK, this year’s UK event is gearing up to be a real nail-biter!

The final will see 32 regional champions from across the UK race against the clock and put their RIB (Rigid Inflatable Boat) driving skill, control and speed to the test around the championship course to secure the prestigious title - 2010 National Champion. The course will involve tricky timed manoeuvres, including a high speed slalom, a man overboard drill, and a blast to the finish line, to test every aspect of the youngsters’ powerboat driving skills.

Now in its 9th year, finalists will be battling it out on the water in the hope of winning a fantastic prize. In the 8-12 age group the championship winner will receive a Honwave T40 RIB with a Honda BF20 engine for their club, whilst in the 13-16 age group the winner will receive, again for their club, a 5m Ribcraft RIB with a Honda BF60 engine.

Andrew Norton, RYA Motor Cruising Projects Manager and Event Director said: “This year’s competition has seen some exceptional talent take to the water throughout so we are expecting some fierce competition and exciting races in the national final. Interest and participation in the championship this year has yet again increased with many new competitors taking part so it will be very exciting to see who will be crowned the 2010 Honda RYA Youth RIB Champion.”

The 2010 champion will be named at the winner’s presentation held on the Honda stand (B062) at 17.00, where the winners will receive their prizes, presented to them by Honda UK’s National Sales Manager Steve Morris and the RYA’s Chief Executive Sarah Treseder.

The Honda RYA Youth RIB Championship, sponsored by Honda and Ribcraft, is a National Championship in which 8-16 year old RIB drivers demonstrate their boat handling skills in a race against the clock with the goal of winning a 5m Ribcraft or a Honwave T40 for their club.

Junior windsurfing action at Derwent Reservoir

Thirty young windsurfers collected at Derwent Reservoir Sailing Club on Sunday 22nd August when the RYA (Royal Yachting Association) Team15 Championship fleet arrived at the Reservoir. For the second time this summer the young windsurfers from all over the north of England collected at the Reservoir to do battle in the RYA’s flagship Youth Windsurfing competition.

The competitors, all of whom are 15 years of age or under, sail for their local team and the team with the best score at the end of the summer wins the RYA North Zone Team15 Championship and gets to compete against all the other RYA Zone winners for the UK Team15 Champions Cup.

“We had a great day,” said Linda Coleby, windsurfing coordinator at Derwent Reservoir. “Sunshine and plenty of wind, in fact there was a bit too much wind for the 3.5 fleet, but they all completed every race with determination and smiling faces!

Our home team, the Derwent Devils, all learned a lot last weekend and it was great to see the Coquet Crushers joining a Team15 event for the first time this year. They were represented by Gustavo Takiguchi who finished in an impressive 8th place in the 3.5 fleet. Congratulations to them all!”

Seven teams from the RYA North Zone have entered this year’s competition:

Pugneys junior afterschool club celebrated a successful first few months with a parents sailing and certificate presentation evening.

The group of seven young sailors first tried sailing last year when they took part in OnBoard taster sessions with their respective schools. Thanks to funding from the John Merricks Sailing Trust they have all been attending weekly afterschool training sessions this year.
Parents were invited to take part in the last session before the Summer holidays. Extra instructors were on hand to take parents out in wayfarers, whilst the children showed off all they had learnt as, despite the light winds, they sailed circles round them in their toppers!
Once back inside each participant was presented with their RYA Stage 2 certificates and OnBoard goodies. Two special achievement awards were also presented to Finlay Taylor and Milly Whitehead in recognition of their continuous improvement each week.
ODO Liz Wrigglesworth was on hand to discuss all the different options for the children and their families to continue in the sport. As such, two participants have returned to the Pugneys junior weekend club and one father has booked himself onto an adult level 1 course.
Liz said: ‘when we began the afterschool club at the start of this season we hoped that it would act as a stepping stone for young people that had attend the centre with school to come back and sail in their own time. All of the participants have had a great time and have gone away with their Stage 2 certificates which is fantastic. I’m sure that we will see many of them back at the centre again soon.’

The Pugneys afterschool club will recommence next Spring and will be open to students that have attended school OnBoard taster sessions this year. It will once again be funded by the John Merricks Sailing Trust meaning that the cost to participants will be kept to a minimum.

The thunder and lightning accompanied by heavy rain on the evening of the 20th of July had been dreadful but then just at the right moment the storm stopped and Commodore Gerard Kennedy with Mary Dawson were able to name the new boat, a beautiful blue Wanderer, with a name that had been especially chosen for it in remembrance of Yvonne McInnes.

Background Information
We own and operate the only two tall ships in the world that were specifically designed and built to accommodate all physical abilities – Lord Nelson and Tenacious. Each ship has 8 wheelchair berths with bunk hoists; fully accessible bathroom facilities; lifts between decks; there are orientation aids for the visually impaired, as well as speaking compass and large digital display compass to help those with visual impairments helm the ship; hearing loop for hearing impaired people, plus many other features. On each voyage we take a mixed crew of 20 able bodied and 20 physical or sensory disabled people and they work together to sail the ship to its destination.

Our aim is to promote the integration of people of all physical abilities, from the age of 16 upwards, through the challenge and adventure of tall ship sailing. There are no passengers on board our ships. Everyone who sails with us work their passage as voyage crew, getting involved in sails setting, helming, night watches, scrubbing the decks and working in the galley. Whilst 50% of our crew may be physically disabled, 100% of the crew are actively involved.

We also operate a Youth Leadership@Sea programme for 16 - 25 year olds providing young people the opportunity to spend time at sea on a tall ship working with people from different age groups, background and abilities. It's all about team working, communication, disability awareness, personal achievement but most of all - having fun. A five day voyage with us can be counted towards the residential element of the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Awards Scheme; plus it’s a positive addition to any young person’s C.V. This programme was cited in a government white paper as a good example of a youth leadership scheme.

GBR Laser sailors take European silvers

Britain’s Paul Goodison and Charlotte Dobson ensured a double podium celebration for Skandia Team GBR on Friday (11 June), each taking a silver medal at the Laser European Championships which concluded this afternoon in Tallinn, Estonia.

Goodison, the current Olympic and World Champion, narrowly missed out on taking a sixth straight European crown in the Laser Standard event, missing out to Croatia’s winner Tonci Stipanovic on the final day of action.
But for Laser Radial sailor Dobson, her silver in Tallinn marks her first time on the European Championship podium and, coupled with her silver at the ISAF Sailing World Cup event in France five weeks ago, is a timely run of form heading in the Laser Radial World Championships which will be held on the Helensburgh sailor’s home waters in Largs next month.

“I’m really, really pleased,“ Dobson commented. “I think I was only second by the skin of my teeth in the end and would’ve have been really disappointed if I’d not finished in the top three after being thereabouts all week.

“We had pretty much the range of conditions, from five to 20 knots during the week, but I really like it when it’s a mixture of things – plus it’s flat water and pretty shifty which I enjoy.”

Dobson continued: “The last few events have gone really well for me. There have been a couple of people missing from here and the Worlds is bound to be a harder challenge, but I’m certainly happy with the way everything is going and having the Worlds at home is going to be pretty cool.”
The European Radial title also went Croatia’s way, courtesy of Tine Mihelic, while Britain’s up and coming Radial sailor Chloe Martin sailed an impressive series over the six-day event, claiming the under 21 European Championship title and finishing 10th overall.

Goodison went into the final day’s racing in the bronze medal position, and managed to pull through into the silver medal spot after Friday’s two races but was unable to catch Stipanovic, who claimed gold ten points ahead of the Skandia Team GBR star.

He was, by his own admission, frustrated yet philosophical at not defending his title, having made a “couple of silly errors” earlier in the week.
“It’s a little bit frustrating not to have won for a sixth time, but at the same time you can’t expect to win every single event, much as you might like to,” Goodison explained.

“I’m reasonably happy with the week, though – there have been some challenging offshore conditions – and I’m really looking forward now to a good solid couple of week’s training in Weymouth.”

Fellow Skandia Team GBR Laser sailor Nick Thompson endured a difficult second half of the week, finishing as the fifth European sailor and seventh in the overall regatta.

“It feels a little bit strange to be saying we’re disappointed with having won silver,” said RYA Olympic Manager Stephen Park, “but Paul’s had such a fantastic run of five straight Laser men’s European titles so it is a little bit disappointing for him that he’s not been able to extend that run this week.

“It’s really pleasing, though, that we’re making ground the Laser Radial class where Charlotte’s silver consolidates the two World Cup medals we’ve won from the three events the sailors have taken part in during 2010.

“It’s a real tribute to both the sailors’ hard work and the coaching efforts led by Chris Gowers but including Tom Saunt and others.”

Young guns set for RYA National Junior Windsurfing Championships

This weekend (12-13 June) will see some of the country’s youngest stars in the making hit Rutland Water as the RYA UKWA National Junior Windsurfing Championships return to Whitwell for their third edition.

The Championships, which are giving more and more youngsters the opportunity to make their mark on the competitive racing scene, are for many their first major national standard event, whilst veterans of last year’s edition will be looking to get one over their closest rivals and clinch a National crown.

Racing will see competition across the 3.5m, 4.5m and 5.8m classes in both Open and Bic Techno classes during the two day event.

Masterminded by the RYA and UKWA to demonstrate to sailors a more smooth transition from grass roots club and regional level competition up into the RYA Zone and National Junior Squad race training programmes, the National Junior Windsurfing Championships span all levels of ability. Team15 (T15) sailors are able to dip their toes into the more competitive arena for the first time, alongside those already involved in RYA Squads bidding for the top silverware, all under the watchful guidance of Kirsty Bonar the Single-handed Pathway Manager.

Duncan Truswell, RYA Youth Racing Manager, said: “The RYA UKWA National Junior Windsurfing Championships are a fantastic event. As well as giving sailors a great introduction to RYA and UKWA competitive Windsurfing, the event also enables more experienced sailors to pit their skills against the best of their peers from all over the UK.

“Whitwell is a great venue for the event, it always has a good atmosphere and we’re very pleased to be running it there again.

“Medal-winning will feature high on many competitors agendas at the event however enjoying the venue, learning from the experienced staff and volunteers at the event, having fun and soaking up the buzz of the championships will be just as important to the sailors,” he concluded.

Gillian Wright, RYA National Windsurfing Development Officer, added: “The Championships are an open event giving every single T15 sailor the opportunity to compete at a national level, pitting their skills against a much broader range of windsurfers than they would normally race with in the T15 Inter-Club Championships.

“With the standard of racing quite a lot higher, we see the event as a next step for all those involved in T15. Presenting more of a challenge the experience will give the sailors some useful feedback on their racing technique as well as giving them a good insight into what is expected of them to make it into the Squads is that is what they are aiming for.”

In some pretty windy and wet conditions last year, Issac Bradley-Baker (Techno 3.5), Harry Davis (Techno 4.5) and Robert Griffiths (Techno 5.5) all won National titles with Harry going on to scoop second place at the RYA Zone Championships later in the year. Special awards went to Zed Spencer-Milnes (Techno 3.5) for impressive improvement over the weekend, Charlotte Seal (Techno 4.5) and Zak Brubert (5.5 Techno) who both demonstrated determination and great potential at their first ever National Championships.

The forthcoming Eric Twiname Championships which will take place at Rutland Water on 8th/9th May.

These championships are invitation only and are one of the RYA (Royal Yachting Association) key selection events for squad training and team selection for the future.

The young sailors and windsurfers compete between themselves and also score points for their RYA Zone (ours is the North Zone - unsuprisingly...). Last year the South East Zone won the overall Zone championship but the North Zone has traditionally done very well in previous years.

Windsurf 4 Cancer Research at Pugneys Country Park

Some of Yorkshire’s top windsurfers will be in action at Pugneys Country Park, Wakefield on Sunday 2nd May when they take part in the Windsurf4Cancer Research charity windsurf event.

All comers are welcome to lend their support to this worthwhile event which is run as part of the National Windsurfing Week 1st to 9th May 2010.

The Park has several other windsurfing events coming up during May including the visit by Boujma Guilloul from Morocco on Thursday 6th May.

One of the World’s top windsurfers, Boujma will be on the water at Pugneys on Thursday 6th May from 3pm until closing and will be holding coaching sessions and demonstrating his inspirational and radical windsurfing styles.

As a recognised RYA Team15 venue, Pugneys Country Park already host one of the region’s top junior windsurfing teams, the Pugneys Pirates, all of whom are under 15 years of age. Having Boujma at the club will be a fantastic opportunity to see one of the World’s best windsurfers in action. The coaching sessions will not be limited to Pugneys Team15 members and the club welcomes adult and junior windsurfers from around the region to watch and learn from the Boujma techniques.

Goodison and Shaw in control at mid-way point in Hyeres

Paul Goodison and Bryony Shaw head the British charge at the half way stage of the French Olympic Sailing Week in Hyeres (Tuesday 27 August), leading their respective Laser and RS:X windsurfing fleets.

Tuesday’s race schedule was once again upset by the light wind conditions which prevailed over the area, and in spite of the organisers pulling the start times forward only one race was possible in the majority of classes.

Shaw‘s RS:X women’s windsurfing class saw just one race, which the Olympic bronze medallist won to extend her lead, while Goodison, the Olympic, World and European Champion, picked up a ninth in the only Laser race of the day but still managed to pull into the lead in the men’s single-handed event. He tops the leaderboard by just one point over Austria’s Andreas Geritzer.

While the 49er yellow fleet saw no action on Tuesday, the blue fleet managed three races with Skandia Team GBR development squad duo Dave Evans and Ed Powys enjoying a solid day on the water including two results inside the top five.

“We had a pretty good day today,” Evans explained. “We were sat in the team hospitality unit again this morning thinking there wasn’t going to be much wind, but luckily we got out today and it was our kind of conditions.

“It was pretty shifty, and we quite like to sail in those conditions because it’s not just about ‘go left’ or ‘go right’ up the course – you have to play the shifts with the wind shifting round.”

“It’s been a pretty slow start, we were on second starts we’d only done one race up until today so we’ve had a lot of sitting around,” added Powys. “We’ve played a lot of scrabble and football and getting a bit bored and twitchy so it was nice to get some good racing in today!”

In spite of having no race action, Paul Brotherton and Mark Asquith have moved into second place overall in the 49er fleet.

Megan Pascoe picked up a fourth in the only race of the 2.4mR Paralympic class, although Helena Lucas is in second overall after finishing fifth today, while RS:X World Champion Nick Dempsey is in fourth overall in the men’s RS:X windsurfing event, with a fifth and a sixth to show for his two races.

Hannah Mills and Claire Cumming remain the top British crew in the 470 Women’s event, with Sarah Ayton and Saskia Clark in 13th while Skandia Team GBR development squad duo Matt Mee and Ian Dobson are the leading British boat in the 470 men’s fleet.

Alison Young saw the best result of the British Laser Radial sailor with an eighth in her only race of the day, while 2009 World Cup winner Ed Wright suffered in the one race for the Finn fleet, picking up 26th which puts him in 13th place overall after two races.

John Gimson and Ed Greig dropped to fourth in the Star class, the Sonar Paralympic trio of John Robertson, Hannah Stodel and Steve Thomas are eighth overall.

Women’s match racers Lucy Macgregor, Annie Lush and Ally Martin will have to wait another day to begin their quarter-finals round after the light winds meant they were unable to race on Tuesday.

Racing at the French Olympic Sailing Week is set to resume on Wednesday 28 April, with the final medal races scheduled for Friday 30 April.

17yr old Connor Bainbridge (above) from Halifax just missed out on winning the Youth National title by four points overall. In the final race Bainbridge needed to finish four places higher than Sam Sills from Devon to clinch the title. In the end however Sills won the final race and Bainbridge came in sixth, leaving Sills to claim the title and Bainbridge overall second. Chasing them both hard was defending champion, 18yr old George Bowles from North Lincs & Humberside SC. After a bad start on day one, Bowles was always running to catch up. 16yr old Chloe Bennett from Rotherham is 5th in the female class, finished in overall 15th place.

Hat-trick for Hamilton as RYA Volvo Youth Nationals close at Weymouth and Portland

It was a hat-trick for Hamilton and a whole raft of well earned victories for the cream of Britain’s sailing talent today (April 9)as the curtain came down on the 2010 RYA Volvo Youth National Championships.

After a long week which saw almost the full series of races completed, nine new National Champion crowns were handed out with RS:X Youth World Champion Izzy Hamilton making it a hat-trick in clinching her third girls RYA Volvo Youth National Title at the event.

Hamilton comments; “It’s been a tough week, especially the last few days where we had to do a lot of pumping in the light winds, so I’m really pleased and relived that it’s over and that I’ve got my hat-trick”

Having lead the girls fleet all week Hamilton’s dominance was clear, winning two of the twelve races at the event. The National title kick starts what looks to be another great season for Holsworthy's Hamilton following her ISAF Youth World’s Silver medal and Youth World title of last year.

The boys competition was a tight contest between Connor Bainbridge (Halifax) and Techno U17 World Champion Sam Sills (Launceston) who was sailing his first UK event on an RS:X board. Sills won out picking up the RS:X National Crown to further furnish his trophy cabinet having racked up the most consistent results of the two.

29er National titles go to Lymington pair Henry Lloyd Williams and Sam Batten. Starting the week in second place, the team focused on consistency posting results in the top three in nine of their fourteen races, proving themselves effective in all conditions. Taking over the top of the fleet on day three they racked up a convincing seventeen point lead to take this year’s title.

Derby’s Philippa Gray and Malvern’s Joanna Lucas took the girls 29er title holding their place as top female crew throughout the regatta. As the week progressed they upped their game in the lighter conditions posting a fifth and fourth over the last days of racing, giving them a sizable lead over the other girls crews placing them tenth overall and top of the girls standings.

For Leicester’s Mike Wood and his Coventry crew Hugh Brayshaw, Wood’s fourth and Brayshaw’s third visit to the event proved fruitful with the duo establishing their fleet lead on day one of the event. Keeping their focus and momentum all week they claimed their hard fought 420 National title ten points ahead of the pack staying true to form. The duo entered the event with an U19 title won at the End of Season Championships in November and a 420 National Winter Championships title won at the beginning of the year.

For the girls title, Joanna Freeman (Poole) and Hannah Mitchell (Manchester) tussled all week with Oxfords Amy Seabright and Romfords Hermione Stanley to secure their extremely hard fought 420 girls crown. In their favourable light winds conditions they gave the boys at the top of the fleet a run for their money winning three of the 420’s eleven races.

Wirral’s Cameron Douglass claimed another hard fought National title in the Radial fleet which saw competition become extremely tight once qualifying series determined the Gold fleet. Having posted bullets in all but one of his qualifying races Douglas went into the final series on top of the pack and with some strong challenges from John Currie, Bleddyn Mon and Elliot Hanson, Douglas kept his focus to land the National title just two points clear of Currie.

Gloucester girl Sophie McKeeman was swapping first and second girl places with Ipswich’s Rheanna Pavey most of the week pushing through on the last days of racing to land her Radial victory and National crown. Apart from a few discards she posted consistent mid table results in all of her races, with ninth being her best result in the final series. .

She said “My aim was to come first in the girls I was going to try and come high up in the boys but didn’t quite managed it but it’s ok because I still won the Girls title”

The Laser Standards saw Colchester’s Martin Evans land the U19 National Title finishing fourth overall in the U21 standings. Having tied points with Eifion Mon, the eventual U21 victor, earlier in the week, Evans was disappointed not to have retained his overall lead of the fleet but sailed a great regatta to claim his crown.

With the catamarans making a return to the event this year, Adam Butler (Christchurch) and Nikki Boniface (Polegate) held the stage in the Spitfire class all week posting an almost unbeaten record of bullets in their ten races, securing them an emphatic victory and the National title. Andrew Sinclair and Benedict Harrison being the only pair to beat them in race nine.

RYA Youth Racing Manager Duncan Truswell rounded up the week: “It’s been the best and most fiercely contested Youth Nationals event yet. It’s been a challenging week in terms of the conditions for the sailors; Monday and Tuesday was very windy but later in the week we’ve had a range of conditions to give a really good trial.

“The sailors have performed extremely well and I’m very impressed with the standard of the sailing that has been on display,” he concluded.

Cracking opening day at the 2010 RYA Volvo Youth National Championships

Sunshine and a steady 15-20 knot wind greeted the 320 sailors vying for honours this week at the 2010 RYA Volvo Youth National Championships as they took to the water for a cracking opening day of competition today (Monday 5, April).

With the Laser Standards starting their racing tomorrow and three races scheduled in the RS:X, 29er, Laser Radial, 420 and Spitfire classes,

Racing kicked off, as scheduled, at 11:15am competitors were eager to start the ball rolling and get some results under their belts making the most of the days fantastic conditions. The RS:X’s were first to get their three races in on the inner most race course, course ‘A’. RS:X Youth World Champion Izzy Hamilton and BIC Techno World Champion Sam Sills bought some impressive calibre to the racecourse and competition was fierce. Sills asserted himself right at the top of the fleet with a win in race one but Connor Bainbridge having settled for second place in race one responded to his challenge taking wins in the following two races. Sills picked up two seconds, with Bainbridge sitting top of the fleet after day one and Sills in second.

Bainbridge commented: “It was me and Sam Sills today. In the first race he just got me by about a meter which I was a bit annoyed about but after that I got two firsts - the last race I was quite far in front”

“I moved up earlier than Sam onto the RS:X because of my size but we’re the same age. We were all expecting him to do quite well and he’s very good!”

In the girls competition Hamilton dominated the day posting two fifths and a sixth, placing her first girl above Charlie Money sitting in second place for the girls (6th overall) and Sophie Bailey in third (11th overall). Watch Izzy’s blog here.

Taking over from the RS:X’s on course ‘A’ just after lunch, the 29ers saw Alex Poyner and George Hand take advantage of the good conditions topping the leader board, winning the first two races then taking second in the third race. Henry Lloyd Williams and Sam Batten finished in second place for the day with two seconds and a first with Christopher Matthews and Edward Gibbons behind them with a fourth and two thirds.

Over on course ‘B’, where racing was split into four separate flights being the largest fleet at the regatta (110 boats), the Radials saw three races take place with conditions being more windy than on the inner course. In what became quite though conditions by race three Cameron Douglas dominated the fleet posting bullets in all his races with Bleddyn Mon finishing second and Jack Wetherell third.

Out on course ‘C’, the most exposed course, the 420 class completed two races, the third being cancelled due to strong winds and rough conditions. Mike Wood and Hugh Brayshaw lead the way with firsts in both the races placing firmly at the top of the table. Tim Gratton and Ed Riley posted a second and a third putting them second overall and James Hayward and Tim Carter sit just behind in third after posting a second and fourth. The all female crew; Anna Burnet and Flora Stewart, are placed first girls for the day after finishing sixth in the first race and then third in the second, the pair excelling in their most favoured high wind conditions.

Principle Race Officer for the event David Campbell James commented: “The first day is always quite a challenge organising everybody but everyone was ready to go pretty early with such great conditions.

“The 420’s and the Spitfires had a tough day with 22 knots and pretty rough conditions but we were pleased to get two races in for them and really pleased to have got a full series in for the others.

“A couple of 420 sailors were saying it was the best sailing they’ve ever had – a cracking start to the week!”

Conditions are set for another great day tomorrow with 15 knots forecast and more sunshine.

RIPON SC INVESTS IN RS TERA DINGHIES TO DEVELOP JUNIOR SAILING

Ripon Sailing Club is delighted to being taking delivery this month of two new RS Tera dinghies to add to their club fleet. Vice Commodore, Jennie Clark, bought the boats at the Dinghy Show with monies provided by Harrogate Borough Council’s Community Chest scheme for one boat, and match funding from the club for the second boat.

‘We used the demo fleet of Tera dinghies on our Young Opportunity course last year and soon realised what a great boat this was to have at the club because it fits so well between our Oppies and our Toppers’ commented Jennie. ‘With 9 Teras now privately owned at the club it was clearly the right time to expand the club fleet and incorporate a couple of Tera dinghies, and the grant funding from Harrogate Borough Council has been a huge boost to the club and our junior sailing scene. As a Volvo Champion Club we place great store on developing our junior sailors and I am confident that these boats will be very well used.’

The boats will be officially launched at a party at the club on Monday 3 May, when the club will also celebrate the running of their 25th annual Young Opportunity course. Barbara Darling, who launched the scheme at Ripon SC and ran so many of these courses, will return to the club to present certificates to the children on this year’s course.

Nail biting moments for Yorkshire Dales Sailing Club

Club members at Yorkshire Dales Sailing Club are holding their breath this week as they wait for the results of the RYA (Royal Yachting Association) Club of the Year competition.

Having been shortlisted into the top five, club members and the committee will now travel down to London on Saturday 6th March to give a presentation to the judging panel. The panel will announce their decision at an award ceremony at the RYA Dinghy Show at Alexandra Palace, London later that afternoon.

The club, which boasts a brand new clubhouse at Grimwith Reservoir, in the picturesque Yorkshire Dales National Park, has gone from strength to strength in recent years.

This strength is due to the hard work and passion of the club Commodore and his team, as club member Phil Whitehead explains:

“Having come from ‘past sell by date’ portabins just 6 months ago, we were amazed to be in the short list of the top five clubs. The successful build of the clubhouse is a result of years of often frustrating legal, financial and planning hurdles, all of which have been overcome by the leadership of our Commodore Jonathan Lister and his team. Through good governance, good timing, bold initiatives, £245,000 from Sport England plus a little luck, we have managed to build a fantastic £700,000 clubhouse.

We really are now able to offer families and trainers the facilities which we have been in the planning for the last 15 years.

Having seen the competition in the RYA Club of the Year Competition we are humbled by our inclusion, as we see our best years regarding increasing participation into this fantastic sport of sailing, yet to come.”

Suzie Blair, RYA Regional Development Officer echoes Phil’s comments and lends her support to the club, “The club members have worked really hard this year organising and running aspects of the RYA OnBoard scheme, and the fact that they have been very successful is largely down to the passion and enthusiasm of the club helpers. They far exceed their predicted OnBoard targets in 2009. I wish them the best of luck in the competition.”

Humber Sports Partnership hosts another informative watersports evening

Over 30 people attended the seminar in Hull city centre on the 28th of January. The Humber Sports Partnership hosted an informative evening for all the sailing, canoeing, rowing and angling clubs in the Humber area, six sailing clubs/centres were represented and all found the evening very useful. David Staniforth attended as representative of the RYA Yorkshire/Humber Committee and thinks that, “This really is a fantastic opportunity for clubs to find out what support there is within their Local Authority and Country Sports Partnership. Likewise is great have the different watersports clubs together to work out how we can work together to get more people afloat in the region.”

RYA Small Equipment Grants

Through Sport England the RYA has received a modest amount of funding to award as a small equipment grant. These grants are available to any club or centre that is actively engaging with RYA to increase regular sailing activity.

The purpose of these grants is to subsidise, up to 50% of the costs of purchasing additional kit and equipment suitable for increasing or sustaining participation in line with the RYA’s targets. The grant is a one-off payment and clubs will be responsible for the maintenance, repair and replacement of any equipment purchased under this scheme. Grants can be used to subsidise the following:

Purchase of new equipment or kit for use by people engaged in sailing/windsurfing activity i.e. boats and boards, sails.

Triple Olympic Gold Medalist Ben Ainslie presents inspirational young sailor with Young Sailor of the Year award

13 year old Emma Labourne from Barrow upon Humber was presented with the prestigious RYA Yorkshire and Humberside Young Sailor of the Year Award 2009 at the Tullet Prebon London International Boat Show on Saturday 9th January.

The RYA Regional Young Sailor awards recognise the outstanding achievements of young sailors across the country and were presented by sailing legend Ben Ainslie, himself a previous winner of the award.

Emma, who is a member of the RYA National Junior Windsurfing Squad, was voted RYA Yorkshire and Humberside Young Sailor of the Year 2009 last autumn by the unanimous verdict of the Regional Committee.

Emma was amongst thirteen RYA Regional Young Sailor of the Year winners to receive their awards at the Tullet Prebon London International Boat Show. These young sailors have made a significant impact on youth sailing, ranging from gold medal winning achievements and overcoming adversity, to the huge amount of hard work and effort they give back to their clubs.

Emma and her family were treated to an action packed VIP day at the show, thanks to Pantaenius Yacht Insurance.

Regional Young Sailors of the Year presentation at the London International Boat Show

Thirteen of the UK’s most talented and dedicated young sailors will be honoured at this year’s Tullet Prebon London International Boat Show on Saturday 9th January.

They will be presented with their RYA Regional Young Sailor of the Year Awards at the show and among the regional winners will be 17yr old Gary Rutherford from Sunderland (winner of the RYA North East Award) and 13 yr old Emma Labourne from Barrow upon Humber (winner of the RYA Yorkshire and Humberside Award). At just 13 years old, Emma will be the youngest recipient at this year’s Award Ceremony. Fantastic achievements all round and a testament to all the dedicated training that takes place every weekend in sailing schools across the UK.

Other announcements at the London International Boat Show include the name of the winner of the YJA Pantaenius National Young Sailor of the Year Award and the winner of the RYA Yachtmaster of the Year Award. The RYA Yachtmaster of the Year Award will be presented by HRH The Princess Royal to the yachtsman or yachtswoman who has excelled and achieved the highest marks in the RYA Yachtmaster qualification in 2009 – one of the most highly sought after qualifications in the boating industry.

Two local sailors honoured in RYA National awards

Two local sailors have been honoured with Lifetime Commitment Awards by the RYA (Royal Yachting Association).

Dennis Altoft of Ripon Sailing Club and Ron Clark of the White Rose Sailing Association were presented with their awards by HRH The Princess Royal at a ceremony in London last week.

Both men were nominated for their awards, in secret, by their respective committees.

“I was so surprised when I received the letter,” exclaimed Ron Clark. “I was the last person in the whole club to know!”

“Ron has been a member of the 50 year old White Rose Sailing Association (WRSA) for 40 years, by far the longest serving member,” explained Jenny Byers on behalf of the WRSA Committee. “Any problems at all, we always say “ask Ron” and he always understands the problem and what has to be done. We have come to rely on Ron as the ‘father’ of the club and many members do not realise just how much he does and has done over the years behind the scenes. Every successful club needs a ‘Ron’!”

Until recently, Ron’s dedication to the WRSA was mirrored by his wife Patricia who unfortunately died a few years ago. “I would very much like to pay tribute to my wife and the support she gave me over the years,” said Ron. “I would also like to thank Di Weatherall, the Commodore, and her committee. My sister accompanied me to the presentation and The Princess Royal was so nice and very welcoming.”

Dennis Altoft, from Ripon Sailing Club echoed Ron’s thanks. “I feel very honoured to have been nominated for the award. I’ve been a member of Ripon Sailing Club for 36 years, since it was just a wooden hut and at 77 years of age I hope I have many more years left to serve!”

“Dennis is a true gentleman,” said Ripon Vice Commodore Jenny Clark. “His enthusiasm is infectious and he is a mine of information. The fact that we have a continual flow of sailors, from novices through to our racing fleet, thereby keeping the club alive, is largely due to Dennis’s efforts. Despite being retired, he continues to devote his time and energy to the club and recently helped with a major club improvement project. In all, Dennis continues to do his bit, year after year. We’d be lost without him!”

Rod Carr, RYA Chief Executive said, “The RYA is delighted to make these awards to Ron and Dennis in recognition of their enthusiasm and promotion of our sport and their years of contribution to the region’s sailing scene. The work and voluntary time that all 49 RYA winners put into our sport is simply outstanding and it is my pleasure to recognise and celebrate this through these awards.”

Humber Mouth Yacht Club secretary receives national award
John Clegg

John Clegg, past Commodore, Training Principal and Secretary of the Humber Mouth Yacht Club, was presented with a Lifetime Commitment Award by the RYA (Royal Yachting Association) last week.

John, who in his own words, has been Secretary of the Humber Mouth Yacht Club for more years than he cares to remember, was nominated for his award in secret by the Club Committee.

“John has been involved with Humber Mouth Yacht Club for the past 42 years,” explained Club Commodore, Sue Culton. “During that time he has steered the club through quite a few changes, successfully established the sailing school and over the years has introduced hundreds of youngsters to the sport. In fact John is the main-stay of the club and he is passionately interested in training young people. He always gives generously of his time and he and his wife have worked tirelessly for the club and its members.”

The Commodore’s last comment was echoed by John himself after receiving the award from HRH The Princess Royal at the ceremony in London.

“I would very much like to thank everyone who I have worked with at the club over the years,” said John. “Receiving this award is truly a team honour. In particular my thanks go to my wife Kay who has been such a support, both to myself and to the club.”

ONBOARD COMMITMENT AWARD FOR LOCAL SAILING OFFICER

Liz Wrigglesworth, from Crofton, Wakefield received one of the first ever RYA RS Sailing OnBoard Awards last week in recognition of her outstanding work as the Yorkshire RYA OnBoard Development Officer (ODO) at a special ceremony held at the Rose Bowl, Southampton.

Liz was awarded the ‘Commitment’ award, recognising her efforts to go the extra mile, working with sailing clubs and centres, involving and encouraging schools to take up the sport, and motivating volunteers. She has hosted a number of fun filled OnBoard festivals this year, even stepping in when two of these were outside the OB area she covers.

Liz, 22, oversees five local OnBoard sailing clubs in the area, providing young people ages eight to 18 with the opportunity to get into sailing and windsurfing.

“I am really pleased and proud to have won this award, which came as a complete surprise at the dinner,” said Liz. “Working as an ODO in Yorkshire can often be a challenge as we do not have a big sailing culture, but there are some great sailing clubs around and I enjoy working with them to raise the profile of sailing in the region. I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to start sailing at a young age and it's great that I can now help give more young people that opportunity.”

Victoria Lenz, RYA OnBoard manager said: “The work done by the 30 OnBoard Development Officers across the country is pivotal to the programme and we have introduced these awards to recognise all the hard work the team put in to making it such a success. Liz is a dedicated and respected member of the team who presents an extremely positive example for OnBoard and the RYA. She always goes out of her way to help her clubs and ensures she is available to support them. She goes the extra mile to inspire people to get involved with sailing and windsurfing. Many of whom remain a permanent participant of the sport.”

The Commitment Award was one of three presented at the OB annual conference dinner; prizes were also awarded for Performance and Innovation. Proud sponsors of the awards were RS Sailing who presented the three winners with specially commissioned trophies to mark their achievements. These perpetual trophies will go on to be presented to future winners of the RYA RS Sailing OnBoard Awards.

Goodison named Athlete of the Year at Skandia Team GBR awards

Britain’s sailors celebrated their bumper year in style at the fourth annual Skandia Team GBR Awards Dinner, held at the DeVere Hotel, Wokefield Park, on Friday (20 November), with Laser star Paul Goodison collecting the top prize of the evening.

The 31-year-old picked up the British Olympic Association’s Athlete of the Year Award for sailing after adding the World and European titles this year to his Olympic gold from Beijing, and remaining unbeaten in five of the six regattas he sailed in during 2009.

Both sailors and support staff were honoured at the event, celebrating the team’s achievements during 2009 which saw a total of 52 medals won at World and European Championships and ISAF Sailing World Cup events.

The first prize winners of the evening were announced by Trevor Hatton of team silver sponsor Accenture, who unveiled the winners of the ‘Accenture Rewards and Recognition Programme’ for 2009.

Now in its fourth year, this incentive scheme encourages Skandia Team GBR sailors and support staff to vote to decide which of them had this year best displayed one of three of the team’s core values of ‘Passion’, ‘Committed to Excellence’ and ‘Gold Driven’. Cash awards of £1,500 were up for grabs for the each of the four winners, and £500 each for the runners-up and the top-voted Development Squad sailor in each category.

Head Physiotherapist Chris Gordon picked up the overall prize for ‘Passion’, while Pete Cunningham, head of the Sports Science team, was chosen as the person most ‘Committed to Excellence’ for the fourth successive year, jointly claiming the prize this time with the team’s Technical Projects Manager Peter Bentley.

Nick Dempsey was voted as the most ‘Gold Driven’ of the team, chosen for his focus and determination in bouncing back from his fourth place in Beijing last year to claim the World Championship title in home waters in September.

RS:X Youth World Champion Izzy Hamilton was crowned Skandia Team GBR Development Squad Sailor of the Year, having been voted upon her peers as the sailor deemed most talented and committed.

The ‘Golden Funnel’ award for coaching excellence, was presented to Finn coach Matt Howard while the evening also saw performance bonus cheques handed out by RYA Olympic Manager Stephen Park to numerous sailors who’d medalled at major regattas during 2009.

“The evening is really the one opportunity we take every year to celebrate the success of all our fantastic sailors – and indeed the support staff – but particularly the sailors,” explained Park on the significance of the evening for Skandia Team GBR.

“We’re often not very good at that – we spend the majority of the other 364 days of the year focusing on the little differences between winning and losing and trying to fill that gap. But this is the one day a year we say let’s let our hair down, let’s celebrate the great success and also reward those who’ve brought home the medals and done such a fantastic job for Great Britain.

“We’ve ended the year on a high, and we’ve ended the year successfully and have certainly reinforced our position as being the top Olympic Classes sailing nation in the world.”

HRH the Princess Royal, President of the RYA, presented the annual RYA Community and RYA Awards at the 2009 RYA AGM on Thursday 19 November
A total of 49 volunteer awards were presented to winners hailing from across the UK from as far afield as the Isle of Wight to Scotland.
Forty-nine Community Awards were projected across three categories recognising; Lifetime Commitment, Outstanding Contribution and Youth.
All the winners enjoyed a celebratory lunch and were presented with a commemorative medallion and certificate by HRH, The Princess Royal.
Rod Carr Chief Executive of the RYA said: “Every one of the Award winners has exceeded the reasonable expectations of their fellow volunteers, club members and the boating community in general and the amount of work they put in is outstanding. These people are an inspiration to us all and it is my pleasure to recognise and celebrate their sheer hard work and commitment through these awards.”

Climb OnBoard at Otley Sailing Club

Otley Sailing Club has been awarded the RYA (Royal Yachting Association) Yorkshire OnBoard Club of the Year trophy for 2009 after a successful year of youth training.

As a climax to a fantastic sailing season, RYA OnBoard Development Officer, Liz Wrigglesworth, visited the final training day of the season and surprised all the sailors and volunteers by presenting them with the award. Liz said “This award is to recognise all the hard work of Otley Sailing Club’s instructors and volunteers. Without them the OnBoard scheme simply wouldn’t happen, and these young people wouldn’t have had the opportunity to go sailing. The whole club should be proud of what they have achieved this year.”

Following an OnBoard taster session at the beginning of the season for students from three local schools, the regular youth training club has been going from strength to strength with as many as 35 members attending.

“We run the "Otley Pirates" Youth Sailing Club on a Sunday Morning, explained Antony Cam, Club Training Officer. “The club is open to anyone who is confident in the water, regardless of age or ability, and is run under the RYA's OnBoard scheme. All attendees receive instruction in sailing, in fun and safe sessions run by RYA Qualified Instructors and Volunteers.”

The youth club has seen so many new members this year that it has now been split into two sections. The newer members are developing their skills working through the RYA stages, whilst the more advanced sailors are moving on to race training with the hope that they will be able to progress on to club and regional racing.

The members of Otley SC hope to continue their good work next season. They plan to encourage more of their young sailors into club and squad racing, as well as integrating the OnBoard and Sailability schemes to allow more young disabled sailors to access the youth club.

Run by sailing’s National Governing Body, the RYA, OnBoard is a highly successful industry supported grass roots programme which seeks to make sailing easier to get into for young people. Fantastic achievements of our northern windsurfers in the recent RYA/UKWA National Windsurfing Championships held down in Weymouth at the Weymouth and Portland Sailing Academy.

Special praise should go to 13yr old Robert York (pictured right) from Covenham Sailing Club who nailed the boys 6.8m class ahead of stiff competition.

The competition took place over the 31st Oct/1st Nov and the winds on the second day made further racing impossible, therefore the results of the classes were decided by the races on the saturday.

Yorkshire & Humberside powerboaters rev up for Honda RYA national championships

Young powerboating enthusiasts from around the UK will be taking part in the national finals of the Honda RYA Youth RIB Championship on Sunday 13th September at the Southampton Boat Show.

Among the competitors in this fantastic competition will be the regional winners from last month’s RYA Yorkshire & Humberside Regional Final.

In the regional final back in August, 12 year old Alex Almond from Brough became the region’s junior Honda RIB Champion and he will compete at Southampton for the first time in the Junior final against other 8 to 12 yr olds from around the UK.
In the Youth Class, 16 year old Daniel Walton from Goole won the Regional Youth Class and he will also be travelling down to Southampton with his eye on winning the national prize for the youth class (13 to 16 yr olds).

Each age group will be racing for the coveted champion’s title as well as one of two 4.8m Ribcraft RIB powerboat with a 50hp Honda four stroke engine complete with an Indespension trailer and Icom IC-M505 VHF radio – one complete RIB package for each class.

Each competitor needs to manoeuvre around a pre-set course in the quickest time, which includes elements such as man over board, reversing around a buoy and high speed boat handling, testing their skill, control as well as speed. Any mistake could incur a time penalty meaning the difference between the title and coming in amongst the field.

Andrew Norton, RYA Motor Cruising Projects Manager and Event Director said: “There has been some exceptional talent take to the water throughout the competition this year so I’m expecting some fierce competition and exciting races across both classes at the final.”

The 2009 champion will be named at the winner’s presentation held on the Honda stand (C62) at 18.00, where the winners will receive their prizes, presented to them by Honda UK’s National Sales Manager Steve Morris and the RYA’s Deputy Chairman Tom Blackburn. Jason Purvey, Sales and Marketing Director for Ribcraft and representatives from Icom and Indespension will also be on hand to congratulate the champions.

Now in its eighth year the Championship allows youngsters to demonstrate their skills as expert boat handlers and improve their skills in a safe, controlled environment. To ensure safety at all times each child is accompanied in the RIB by a competent adult/instructor.

Goodison takes first World Championship gold

Sailing Olympic champion Paul Goodison has added a long-awaited first World Championship title to his belt, claiming an emphatic gold at the Laser Worlds which drew to a close in Halifax, Canada, on Wednesday (26 August).

In spite of losing two days of the six day event – one day with too much wind courtesy of Hurricane Bill, the next with too little – the 31-year-old kept his cool throughout to add the world title to his Olympic and European crowns.

Yorkshire Centre of the Royal Meteorological Society -If you are interested in attending this talk please register for a place on this website. There are a limited number of places available, so early registration is advisable.
The first speaker is BBC's Paul Hudson, on 26 November 2009. The future programme is still very much in its infancy, but topics that have been proposed include climate change, gardening and weather, sea breezes and cloud formation, weather and art and weather and photography. Other possible talks include climate/meteorology relating to buildings, energy and observations.
We are intending to cover a wide range of weather related topics and hopefully some of your members (or their family/friends) will find one or more of them of interest. We are pitching the level at the old 'Horizon' level (A-level or first year degree) which people should find well within their grasp.

If we can get enough attendances from the sailing world there is a good possibility of getting talks more specific to sailing; weather and sport, forecasting, reading the weather from the sky, etc, so please encourage your members to attend.

Are you a Level 2 Race Coach who is interested in becoming a Dinghy Senior Instructor?

There has always been a pathway from Race Coach to SI, however attending an SI Course having only completed the race coach training is a big step for most people. SI course attendees are usually experienced Dinghy instructors however we realise that attending a five day course is a big commitment and not always viable for those volunteers working in clubs.

A Senior Instructor can be Chief Instructor at an RYA Training Centre and as such supervises and manages instructors delivering sessions from the RYA Schemes. The RYA is putting on two day bridging Course that will help Race Coaches learn more about Training Centre operations and most importantly about the sessions that a Dinghy Instructor delivers from the National and Youth Sailing Schemes. This course is designed to assess the differences in knowledge and help fill any gaps. At the end of the course you will receive guidance as to the nexts steps to SI.

The course will be taking place at Grafham Water centre on the 19th/20th September. Places are limited (minimum numbers will be required to make the course viable), but if interested please submit a basic sailing/coaching CV (Contacts Below) and a covering letter detailing why you would like to become an SI. The deadline for this is 1st September. The course will cost £100 and will include coaching, use of facilities, equipment and resources, all meals and accomodation on the Saturday night. If you are involved in developing adult sailing at your club you may be able to ask your Regional Development Officer if there is any funding available to subsidise the course cost.

Wake up and get onboard
Ten young sailors from the Wakefield and Featherstone area had a great time when they took part in the RYA (Royal Yachting Association) Yorkshire OnBoard Festival and visited the National School Sailing Association Regatta at Bridlington.

The youngsters, from RYA OnBoard partnership clubs and schools including Pugneys Country Park Sailing Centre, West Riding Sailing Club and St Thomas’ Junior School, learned about tides and waves and how the wind affects the sea.
After watching the start of the regatta it was time for the Wakefield youngsters to take to the water in Wayfarers and Teras, and for all of them this was their first taste of sailing on the sea, a big leap from Pugneys Country Park!
Although the aim of the visit was to gently introduce the youngsters into sailing a few informal prizes were awarded!
On Monday ‘Wettest sailor of the day’ went to Daniel Thompson aged 9 from Normanton who has sailed at Pugneys Country Park Junior Club for the past year after attending a summer holiday course at the centre.
Following that, on Tuesday ‘Best wave surf in a Tera’ went to Daniel Watson aged 10 from Featherstone, who started sailing in September 2008 with St Thomas’ school through the school’s OnBoard programme.

“This was the first OnBoard festival in the Yorkshire region and all the participants and instructors had a fantastic time,” said Liz Wrigglesworth, the RYA Yorkshire OnBoard Development Officer. “It was a great opportunity for the young sailors to get a taste of a large National Regatta, hopefully it has given them something to aspire to in the future.”

Goodison makes it five in a row at Laser Europeans

Olympic sailing gold medallist Paul Goodison staked a confident claim ahead of this month’s Laser World Championship by clinching his fifth straight European title in Sweden today (Saturday 8 August).

The 31-year-old from Rotherham notched up a convincing win after six days racing in Landskrona, bouncing back from a disappointing opening day where he was disqualified for a premature start in race one, to claim overall victory.

The Skandia Team GBR sailor is now unbeaten on the international circuit since taking gold at the Beijing Olympic Games a year ago, winning his comeback event at the French leg of the ISAF Sailing World Cup in April, before adding further World Cup titles to his belt in Holland and Kiel in May and June prior to his latest European success.

“I was surprised at how early after coming back after my break after the Games that I started getting back to winning again,” Goodison explained, “and when you’re sailing well that obviously helps with the confidence. “

Of his Europeans performance, he recalled: “I was pretty annoyed after the first day here when I was black flagged in the first race and then dropped from fourth to eighth in the second race. I gave myself a kick up the backside and refocused and managed to sail pretty well for the rest of the week to get a good lead heading into the last day today.

“I didn’t sail particularly well today I did enough to keep off the Croatian and the Cypriot who were the only ones who could beat me, so I’m pretty chuffed and it’s great to be European Champion again.”

Goodison has a quick turnaround in the UK before heading out to Canada early next week in preparation for the World Championship, where he’s hopeful his form will continue.

“Since coming back from the Games, the Worlds has been the one win I’ve really wanted and the whole year has been geared towards preparing for that,” Goodison explained.

“Although I can’t go there thinking that the title’s mine, I’m pretty happy with the way I’m sailing so there’s no reason not to be confident of doing well there.”

Lymington’s Nick Thompson also scored a top five finished for Skandia Team GBR at the Laser Europeans, while RYA Volvo National Youth Squad sailor Robert Holmes won the Under 19 Laser European title, with fellow youth sailor Alex Mills-Barton second.

Meanwhile, up the Swedish coast in Varberg, Skandia Team GBR’s John Gimson and Ed Greig finished their first ever Star World Championship on Saturday in 29th place out of the competitive 86 boat fleet. USA’s George Szabo and Rick Peters took the World Championship title.

It is also an opportunity for coaches to revalidate their Level 2 Racing Coach Certificate.
It is free to Volvo RYA Champion Clubs or for clubs working with their Regional Development Officer/Regional Club Coach to develop adult participation; otherwise it will be £10 per person.

Team15 – North Zone final at Covenham – Sunday 12th July

For the final time this summer, young windsurfers from all over the North of England will compete in the RYA North Zone Team15 event. The fleet will collect at Covenham Reservoir (between Grimsby and Louth) this weekend for the deciding event, to see which club takes the RYA North Zone Team15 Championship 2009.

RYA Team15 Windsurfing Competition 2009 - North Lincs Invaders leave the fleet in their wake
Round three The Derwent Devils welcomed the Team15 fleet to Derwent Reservoir Sailing Club on Sunday 28th June for the third event in the four match series. This was the first Team15 event ever to be held at the Reservoir and some members of the fleet had difficulty finding the correct county never mind the right lake! However, everyone arrived safely, to one of the windiest sailing clubs in England; on Sunday however, the wind chose to have an off-day. Despite the light winds, grey skies and drizzle the competitors had a fantastic weekend, training and racing, thanks to the hospitality of Derwent Reservoir Sailing Club. Despite a variety of holiday and exam commitments, 44 youngsters (all 15yrs and under) took part, separated into classes by sail size. As usual, the biggest fleet was in the 3.5m class with eighteen young windsurfers all battling to be first. Six members of the newly formed Derwent Devils took part in this class, ranging in age from eight year old Charlie Tose, the youngest member of the Team15 fleet, up to fourteen year old Izzy Bolt and Lottie Philips. The winner of the 3.5m fleet was eleven year old Oliver Anderson from Pugneys Pirates, winning four out of the five races. Oliver was chased in every race by Jacob Newton and Lewis Russell from North Lincs Invaders. The competition in the larger sail classes was equally well fought, especially in the 4.5m class, with the North Lincs Invaders scoring a clean sweep from 1st to 5th place. First and second places in this class were separated by just one point between 12yr old Charlotte Seal and the eventual winner, 11yr old Jordan Houran. Max Bushell continued the winning form for North Lincs by winning the 6.8m class but the Invaders did not have it all their own way and the crown in the 5.5m class went to 13yr old Kathryn Durham from Pugneys Pirates. For the third time in the series the team prize went to North Lincs Invaders who are now leaving the other North Zone Team15 clubs in their wake. With one more event left in the four match series the North Zone 2008 Team15 Champions look invincible in 2009. The next round of the RYA North Zone Team15 championship moves to the far south of the zone in July, when the competition calls in at Covenham Reservoir, Lincolnshire on Sunday 12th July

RYA INTRODUCES NEW TEAM15 AMBASSADORS

In a bid to encourage even more youngsters to sign up to Team15 (T15) and to help in the education of young sailors, many of whom are new to windsurfing and windsurfing competition, the RYA has signed up ‘Team15 Ambassadors’.

The new ambassadors are made up of youngsters from the RYA Zone Squads, who typically range between eight and 15 years old and are tasked with helping develop their Team15 club by promoting Team15 and the RYA pathway and Zone Squad programme to other young sailors.

The ambassadors will also represent the RYA at Team15 inter-club events and act as a point of contact for the sailors who may have questions about the zone squad and other training opportunities.

One of the new ambassadors from the RYA North zone squad and has been a member of Team15 for three years said: “I am 11 years old and love windsurfing. Being a member of the RYA North Zone Squad I feel there are lots of skills that I can pass on to my Team15 friends. I am happy to help out and get involved promoting the Team15 initiative to others; I have already introduced 4 new children to come and join our Team15 club this spring.”

Gillian Wright, RYA Windsurfing Development Officer said: “The ambassadors are a great way for the youngsters to share their skills and knowledge with other young sailors. All the kids taking part as so enthusiastic, but with some events having 50 plus competitors they are going to have their work cut out for them.”

The first Team15 Ambassadors were presented with their certificates and specially designed rash vests at a recent Zone Squad training weekend. The ambassadors included:

Rotherham youngster sails to RYA Eric Twiname glory

Young Wingfield windsurfer Chloe Bennett is celebrating after landing a top prize at the 2009 RYA Eric Twiname Championships – one of Britain’s biggest events for the country’s brightest junior sailing talents.

Now in their 23rd year, the Championships are the pinnacle of the racing calendar for the RYA Zone and Home Country squads, which are the first rung on the ladder towards Olympic Classes sailing.

Some 226 sailors – all aged between eight and 15 and representing the nine RYA Zone and Home Country squads - descended on Rutland Water this weekend (9-10 May) in a bid to help their Zone land the coveted Eric Twiname Shield and be named the top RYA Zone.

And 15-year-old Chloe enjoyed an excellent weekend winning the top girls’ trophy for the Bic Techno 7.8 class. Her victory also meant that Chloe helped her Zone, the North Zone, to third place overall in the race for the Eric Twiname Shield.

Although breezes of 15 plus knots guaranteed a cracking first day of racing on Saturday, the wind wasn’t quite so willing to play ball on Sunday and with no further racing possible on day two the overnight leaders in the dinghy and windsurfing classes were crowned 2009 RYA Eric Twiname champions.

Duncan Truswell, RYA Youth Racing Manager, said: “The standard of racing on Saturday was the highest I have seen at this event for some years. In some shifty, gusty winds, sometimes over 20 knots, all the sailors did really well to hang in there and keep focussed for the full four races and it was great to see the level of skill being displayed.

“This is testament to the work the sailors have put in with their coaches over the winter and the fact that the RYA Eric Twiname Championships is held in such high regard by everyone. I was really impressed this weekend.”

John Derbyshire, RYA Racing Manager / Performance Director added: “The RYA Eric Twiname Championships are a fundamental rung in the development ladder for the young sailors, some of whom will have started at the absolute grassroots through the RYA’s OnBoard and Team15 programmes and for those who we hope will eventually go on to represent Britain as seniors at the World’s biggest Olympic Classes regattas.”

The first “Themed Round” of funding form Sport England’s 09-13 Strategy is Rural Communities:
New Fund to Promote Sports in Rural Areas
Sport England has announced that its new £10 million fund to create sporting opportunities for people in rural areas is now open for applications. This is the first in a series of themed funding rounds aimed at increasing community based sports. The Rural Communities Themed Round is designed to give a wide range of organisations, from local authorities to sports clubs and smaller community groups, an opportunity to develop and deliver new and innovative projects to overcome barriers to both participation and supply of sporting opportunities. Successful bids will make significant contributions to two of Sport England’s strategic outcomes:
· Growing participation in grassroots sport.
· Sustaining participation by improving the quality of people’s sporting experience.
The minimum grant available is £10,000, but in order to maximise the positive effect on sport in rural areas, Sport England is explicitly encouraging high value, high impact projects. A significant proportion of the successful bids are expected to be projects requiring National Lottery funding of more than £500,000. A detailed application prospectus for the Rural Communities Themed Round is available on Sport England’s website.

Less than week remaining to enter 2008 RYA Youth Nationals
Bowles & Masters vie for RYA Volvo Youth Nationals supremacy at Largs

The battle for windsurfing supremacy is hotting up as George Bowles and Ali Masters sit neck and neck in pole position after day two of the RYA Volvo Youth National Championships and Trials at Largs Sailing Club.

With blustery, wet conditions testing the sailors to the max, it was 16-year-old Bowles from Brigg that enjoyed the best return from today’s three RS:X races (Tues 14 April) to ensure that 2008 European RS:X Youth silver medallist Masters was not going to have everything his own way in the Youth Nationals gold quest.

With Masters, 17, heading the overnight leaderboard, Bowles posted scores of 2, 2, 1 to Masters’ 3, 1, 2 to put them level on nine points apiece after five races.

However, Bowles, who only stepped up to the RS:X board from the smaller Bic Techno last September, is not getting carried away by his early regatta success.

He said: “I’m definitely really pleased with the way things have gone so far; my goal for the week was just to try to do the basics right. It was very gusty today and my consistency is probably the thing that’s pleased me most so far and that’s what I’ll be looking to carry on for the rest of the week. My first event on the RS:X board was only last September so I have surpassed my expectations after the first two days but we’re not even halfway through yet and there is still a long week ahead.”

Funding Opportunities 09-13
Sport England have announced their new funding strategy which focuses on three key areas of development:
Grow
New regular sailing participants (youth & adult)
Sustain
Supporting existing regular participants (youth & adult)
Excel
Improved talent development (primarily youth)
Sports clubs, voluntary and community organisations, local authorities and education establishments will be able to apply to these four open-access funding streams:
Up to £30 million will be invested via regular themed funding rounds that meet specific needs of community sport
£7 million will be available in small grants of between £300 and £10,000 to support sporting projects across England
£3 million will be distributed through Sportsmatch
£5 million will be invested, through a new Innovation Fund, in projects that identify and pilot new ways of promoting and supporting grassroots sport

RYA Raymarine Yorkshire and Humberside Young Sailor of the Year title 2008

Dean Crangle, winner of the RYA Raymarine Yorkshire and Humberside Young Sailor of the Year title 2008, was presented with his prestigious award at a ceremony at the London Boat Show last week. A fantastic achievement for the 16 year old who received his award for his hard work at Thornton Stewart Sailing Club.

Get OnBoard with Pugneys! Pugneys Country Park Watersports Centre held its annual prize-giving on Saturday 13th December and became the surprise recipient of an award itself! RYA (Royal Yachting Association) OnBoard Development Officer Liz MacDonald presented Centre Manager Steve Cerrone with the Yorkshire Regional OnBoard Achievement Award for the Centre’s work with young people in the region. “The RYA OnBoard scheme works with a number of clubs across the region but Pugneys was the first to get started,” explained Liz MacDonald. “Over the past summer Pugneys alone has introduced over 300 new youngsters to the sport of sailing and 20 of these youngsters are now regular attenders at the Pugneys sailing and windsurfing club.” “We are very pleased to be the recipient of the RYA OnBoard Achievement Award and to be recognised for the work we do as a team at Pugneys,” said Steve Cerrone after the award ceremony. “I would like to pay tribute to all the parents and staff who make it all possible, especially at the Saturday Club, and most importantly the young sailors. This year has been particularly successful for Pugneys and we have current and past young sailors and windsurfers who are now members of National Training Squads but perhaps the biggest congratulations should go to Helen and Sarah Burgess who won the 405 National Championships earlier this summer. This year our young windsurfers have travelled as far afield as the Scottish borders and the dinghy sailors have competed in events across the country from Weymouth to Scotland. Fantastic achievements all round.” Ward Councillor June Drysdale agreed and supported the RYA OnBoard Achievement Award, “The facilities and the commitment of the staff here at Pugneys are fantastic. Everyone has the children at heart.” These feelings were echoed by Mrs Kate Earp whose son Matt has just completed his Dinghy Instructor Course at the centre. “I would like to say how wonderful the facilities are and most importantly how great the staff are.” Plaques were presented to every team member in the Junior Windsurfing and Sailing sections and then the climax of the award ceremony came when the names of the Overall Winners of the Windsurfing and Sailing sections were revealed. The RYA Team15 Cadet of the Year award went to 10 year old Matthew Carey from Halifax who attends Bradford Grammer School. “Choosing one overall winner was very difficult,” said Windsurfing Team15 Instructor Roy Peacock. “Matthew’s personality and his ability to mix in with the other team members were most important.” Pugneys Dinghy Cadet of the Year was 16 year old Robert Gair from Wakefield who attends Queen Elizabeth Grammer School. “This year the Dinghy award could have gone to an one of four or five candidates,” said Pugneys Dinghy Instructor Tim Dean. “In the end it came down to personality and Robert’s encouragement to others and his willingness to help.” “Coming here to Pugneys is great fun,” said Robert. “I have just completed my RYA Assistant Dinghy Instructor Course and next summer I hope to do my Instructor Course.” This comes on top of Robert’s packed summer schedule which includes completing his Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award on board a Tall Ship in 2009. Pugneys Country Park Watersports Centre is open all year except Christmas week and attracts young people from Wakefield and the surrounding area, some from as far afield as Doncaster and York. Bewerly Park Centre for Outdoor Education in partnership with the volunteer ran ‘Gybe Scheme’ have just become OnBoard in North Yorkshire.
Sailing and windsurfing at Ripon Race course, Farnham Lake and Grimwith Reservoir, in the Yorkshire Dales the partnership have been working together to get more local young people afloat.

Becoming OnBoard has encouraged them get to also RYA recognition for windsurfing and in turn to introduce more structure to their regular sessions, helping children to work through the Junior Windsurfing and Youth Sailing Scheme’s. They have also been able to purchase more buoyancy aids and wetsuits for the younger children and new windsurf boards to help the budding windsurfer’s progress and develop their skills further.

Since signing up to OnBoard the ‘Park & Gybe’ partnership have strengthened their links with the Yorkshire Dales Sailing Club, based at Grimwith, and they are now offering regular youth training sessions on Saturday mornings. They have been recruiting club members as volunteers to help out with the teaching, rescue cover, rigging, launching etc, and with the building of the YDSC shiny new clubhouse starting this really is an ideal venue to introduce more young people to sailing and windsurfing and to keep them doing it!

Sam Cook (as seen below in the Comet with some Giggling Girl Guides) who runs the Gybe Scheme said, “We are very excited to be OnBoard and are really looking forward to getting more local youth groups afloat next year, flying the OnBoard flag int’ Yorkshire Dales!”.

Over the past month, 10 students from St Thomas’ Junior School in Featherstone have been setting sail at Pugneys Country Park. The year 6 pupils were introduced to sailing through the National ‘OnBoard’ scheme which aims to introduce more young people to the sports of sailing and windsurfing. Staff from the school also got involved when they attended Pugneys for a sailing course earlier in the year.

The twice weekly sessions were arranged by Tim Butler and Heather Hudson – year 6 teachers from the school, and Yorkshire’s OnBoard Development Officer - Liz McDonald. All was made possible by funding from Sport England’s ‘Sport Unlimited’ programme which was used to pay for the instructors and boat hire at Pugneys.

“The sessions were a great success and participants thoroughly enjoyed themselves”, said Liz. “None of them had been sailing before, the OnBoard scheme and funding from Sport Unlimited made the sport more accessible to these local youngsters. It was fantastic to see them progressing each week and tackling the challenges set for them.”

The weather was not always kind to the youngsters; the strong winds of the last day in particular proved challenging. However the students’ enthusiasm was not dampened as they learnt a range of skills over the 10 sessions, including rigging, steering and capsizing. RYA Stage 1 certificates will be presented to the participants at school, proving they are now competent sailors.

St Thomas’ Junior School hopes to continue with the scheme and give more students the opportunity to go sailing in the spring.

Taster Day at Otley Sailing Club

48 primary school children from the Otley area attended Otley Sailing Club on at the end of October, for their first taste of dinghy sailing. Two sailing sessions were run throughout the day by volunteers from the club, as part of the National RYA (Royal Yachting Association) OnBoard scheme. Through the scheme, the club hopes to encourage more local youngsters and their families to get involved with the exciting sport of sailing.

The children heard about the taster day when Liz McDonald, Yorkshire’s OnBoard Development Officer, and Antony Cam, Senior Instructor from the club, joined forces with the local School Sports Co-ordinator David Nutt. They kick started the scheme in Otley by visiting four local primary schools to give a sailing presentation to all year 5 and 6 children.

The weather was less than ideal with strong gusty winds and intermittent drizzle. However, it did not put off the budding young sailors. Judging by the squeals of delight heard from the bank, the club’s two man ‘Access’ dinghies were a great hit. Experienced sailors from the club were also on hand to give rides in their larger, faster dinghies.

“The taster day was a great way to begin promoting sailing within the Otley area” said Liz, “We could not have hoped for a better response from the local youngsters and it was fantastic to see so many of them out on the water. The volunteers from the club did a great job to keep everyone safe and happy throughout the day.”

At the end of their sailing sessions all the children were invited to join Otley SC’s regular junior sailing club, held on a Sunday morning from September to November, and a Thursday evening from May to July. 11 of the youngsters were so keen they returned the next day to get out on the water again!
